Science

Publisher's Picnic

Keystone Academy Charter School hosts its annual Publisher's Picnic to celebrate the culmination of a year-long student book project.

The event serves as a milestone celebration for students and their families, highlighting specific academic achievements.

Scientific Research: Students in kindergarten through eighth grade spend the school year researching a specific science or STEM topic.

Book Writing: Children gradually write their books, chapter by chapter, continually integrating new lessons from science class.

Presentation to Parents: During the picnic, students officially "publish" and present their completed books to their parents.

Long-Term Academic Legacy: By the time students graduate from the eighth grade at the Tacony campus, they will have authored nine complete science books.

Science Fair

The Keystone Academy Charter School Science Fair is a major school-wide event held at the Tacony campus to showcase the scientific knowledge, creativity, and experiments of its students.

The event acts as a platform for practical, hands-on STEM education and features several components.

School-Wide Participation: Students from kindergarten through eighth grade actively create and showcase their projects.

Tiered Competition: Participants face off for top honors across three distinct grade categories.

Diverse Experiments: Student exhibits cover a wide range of real-world scientific properties, spanning from chemical reaction experiments to the physics involved in cooking recipes.

Media Recognition: The event regularly draws local community attention and has been featured on local news broadcasts.

Math

Pi Day

Keystone hosts an annual, school-wide Pi Day Math Festival at its Tacony campus to celebrate the mathematical constant Pi (π).

The event blends interactive math education with collaborative school spirit through several key traditions:

The Digits of Pi Parade: To kick off the celebration, kindergarteners, first graders, and second graders form a massive, synchronized human sequence. Each student holds a single number, aligning themselves in precise order to physically represent the continuous digits of Pi.

School-Wide Math Festival: The older student divisions shift the celebration into a competitive math festival. Middle schoolers and upper elementary classes spend the afternoon facing off in interactive math games and problem-solving contests.

Pi Day Door Decorating Contest: Classrooms across all grade levels compete in a thematic decorating contest. Students design mathematical artwork, geometric models, and Pi-themed displays across school doors.

Math 24 Challenge: A daylong Math 24 Challenge takes place throughout the building, with a culminating winners' celebration.

Local News Highlights: Mirroring the success of their science fair, Keystone Academy's lively math celebration is a frequent favorite for Philadelphia broadcast media, regularly receiving spotlight coverage

8th Grade Algebra I

Keystone Academy Charter School’s 8th Grade Algebra I program provides students with the math fundamentals needed for advanced high school classes and STEM careers. Because STEM jobs are projected to grow by 10.4% by 2033, completing this course in middle school is an essential step for long-term career readiness.

The program operates using a highly methodical structure:

Early Preparation: Curriculum alignment begins in the fifth and sixth grades to build necessary math foundations prior to eighth grade.

Strict Selection: Enrollment requires passing standardized assessments, securing teacher recommendations, and completing mandatory weekend and summer math sessions.

Hybrid Instruction: Students learn through live remote instruction paired with direct, in-person support from classroom teachers.

The coursework yields measurable improvements in student logic, problem-solving capabilities, and classroom focus. To achieve similar results, schools must establish complete staff agreement and support. When the entire faculty actively reinforces the program's objectives, students clearly understand the expectations and are more likely to pass the demanding coursework.

School Uniqueness

The Idea Box (Maker Space)

Keystone Academy's "Idea Box" is a dedicated, specialized innovation lab designed to promote hands-on STEM education. It is a creative workspace built to encourage students to develop innovative approaches.

The facility serves as a focal point for the school's engineering and technology goals through several key features:

Targeted Grade Span: Student engineers fully use the lab across the school's entire kindergarten through 8th-grade student body.

Emerging Technology: The room provides students with a diverse range of modern technological tools, machinery, and resources for building physical models and prototypes.

Active Project Space: It functions as an experiential learning hub where classes step away from standard textbooks to design, test, and troubleshoot real-world engineering concepts.
